Alex McCarthy, who previously built up Mesirow Financial’s Asian presence, has joined insurance company Aflac in Tokyo as a manager in the office of the COO. Earlier in his career he spent time with Federated Investors and BNY Mellon.

Other winners included Sentosa Asian Credit Fund (Best Asia ex-Japan Hedge Fund and Best Asian Fixed Income Fund), Akito Fund (Best Japan Hedge Fund), Springs China Opportunities Fund (Best Greater China Hedge Fund), Doric Asia Pacific Small Cap Fund (Best Asian L/S Equity Fund), SFP Value Realization Fund (Best Asian Event Driven Fund), RV Capital Asia Opportunity Fund (Best Asia-based Global Macro Fund), Merchant Commodity Fund (Best Asia-based CTA/Managed Futures Fund and Best Singapore-based Hedge Fund) and Pine River China Fund (Best New Asian Hedge Fund).

Acion Partners, the Asian event-driven hedge fund set up in Hong Kong by York Capital’s former Asia head Feng Hsiung, has hired Toru Nakahashi (ex-JP Morgan, Rockhampton, Credit Suisse) and Hitesh Chetan Uttamchandani (ex-Abax) as portfolio managers.

According to Eurekahedge, Asian hedge funds were up 5.88% in April and 9.40% year-to-date, and have increased their AUM base by US$13.3 billion since the start of the year.

Aoife McGillion, until recently CFO of Ardon Maroon Fund Management in Hong Kong, has joined the Securities and Futures Commission in a risk and strategy role. Earlier she was at Merrill Lynch and KPMG.

RWC Partners has hired Everest Capital’s 15-person emerging markets team. Most of the team will be based in Miami, but Garret Mallal, a portfolio manager, and Min Chen, an Asian equity research analyst, will be based in a new RWC office in Singapore.

Hiroaki Saito, previously with SPRING (Specialised Research and Investment Group), has joined Bayview Asset Management in a marketing role.

Tokyo Live: Two observations from two days of walking the streets of young and trendy Harajuku – Chinese youngsters are everywhere (with shopping bags so they’re spending big time) and all the hip boutiques are desperately looking for sales staff. Tokyo is boom town.

Yuet Wei Wan, formerly of SAC Capital’s CR Intrinsic unit, has set up Wei Capital Management in Hong Kong and is expected to launch a pan-Asian hedge fund.

Donald Ewer has joined LIM Advisors in Hong Kong to head up its Asian fixed-income and credit desk. He was most recently at BTG Pactual and earlier at firms such as Citadel and Caxton.
