Masaru Onodera has left Sumitomo Life Insurance to join the alternative investments consulting team at Russell Investments Japan.

Bruce Kirk, one of the founding partners of Asian multi-strategy hedge fund firm Azentus Capital in Hong Kong, recently left the firm and isunderstood to have plans to set up a new fund. Earlier in his career Bruce had stints at Goldman Sachs, Blackstone, Japan Advisory and KBC.

The Eurekahedge Asia ex-Japan Hedge Fund Index returned an estimated -0.57% in March which brings YTD to +3.51%.

The Eurekahedge Japan Hedge Fund Index returned an estimated +3.63% in March which brings YTD to +10.72%.

Yip Ka-hay, the first portfolio manager in Asia to be hired by Steven Cohen at SAC, will start an Asian macro hedge fund in July. The Hong Kong-based firm has been named Bright Stream Capital Management. Prior to SAC Yip was CIO at PMA. William Fong (ex-PMA) and Joshua So (ex-SAC) have also joined Bright Stream.

The AUM of the Hong Kong hedge fund management industry has increased by more than a third over the past two years, according to a survey by the HK Securities and Futures Commission. The survey of 348 licensed hedge funds in Hong Kong found that AUM had increased by 38% from the time of the last survey in September 2010 to US$87.1bn as of end of September 2012.
